李青萍


一位在三、四十年代蜚声中外并得到刘海粟、徐悲鸿、齐白石热情赞许的女画家,一位参加民主革命、支援抗日战争、解放后供职中央文化部,与田汉、徐悲鸿、梅兰芳同事并受到周总理亲切接见的爱国知识分子,却在1951年突然销声匿迹,直到30年后又突然重返画坛。这漫长的30年,李青萍她在哪里?令人想不到的是:她先后以“特嫌”、“反革命”、“右派”等罪名被管制、监禁、抄家、批斗、强制劳动,失去工作和亲人,受尽屈辱和折磨,孤苦无依,贫病交加,以至靠卖冰棒、卖水、糊纸盒、捡垃圾维持生活。她坚强地活着。她在捡破烂时捡到一些人家丢弃的颜料瓶,便洗出其中残留的颜色偷偷作画;她在批斗时,手背在身后还在墙上虚拟地画着。这真是一位忠贞不渝的艺术信徒,一位献身艺术九死而不悔的画坛女杰。正如徐悲鸿三十年代在她画集上的题词:“艺术第一”,她确是把艺术看得高于一切、重于一切的。为了艺术她谢绝有情有义的男友而终身不婚,为了艺术她不计荣辱得失,承受一切苦难。从她身上我们看到了艺术与人生的完美统一,与人生完美统一的艺术才是崇高而又圣洁的真艺术。她的人生与艺术堪与历史上的徐青藤、八大山人、凡•高等遥相辉映。她在上世纪八十———九十年代,以耄耋之年,病残之身,发奋挥毫,如经冬老梅,春蕾怒放,创作了大量作品。《生的回声》是她平反后的第一幅精心之作,那直刺苍溟的椰树,那飘浮广宇的生灵,那驰骋回旋的宇宙轨迹,融会着老人对人生的感悟和理想的向往,富于哲思和象征意味;《勿忘我》、《表妹》是意象性的肖像,可见其在浪漫的意象表现中包含着深厚的写实功力;还有那泼彩的风景,朦胧的人物和特写的花卉,具有东方的写意与西方的抽象巧妙融合的表现特征。九十年代后期的更多抽象之作,我们不难从其笔触色彩间捕捉到感情的信息,感知作者对于美丑善恶的强烈爱憎。青萍老人的画,既有来自其父祖的中国泼墨写意画的基因,又有经过科班训练的扎实的写实功力,她曾得到印度泼彩画家沙都那萨亲传技艺,又从马蒂斯、毕加索、凡•高、波洛克等那里广受启迪,而最终形成自己独特的绘画语言和艺术风貌。其晚年劫后之作,更加热情奔放,挥洒自如,内涵深沉,炉火纯青。那是饱含人生五味的彩色的诗篇和乐章。

IntroductionofLiChingPing

Awell-knownfemalepainterthroughoutChinaandinternationallyduringthe30’sand40’sinthe20thcentury,shereceivedpassionatepraisesandapprovalfromcolleagueslikeLiuHaiSu,HsuBeiHong,ChihBaiShihandMeiLanFang.Asapatrioticintellectual,shewasalsodearlyreceivedbyPremierChouEnLai.However,shesuddenlydisappearedwithoutasignin1951andnotuntil30yearslatershereappearedinthepaintingcommunity.Duringtheselong30years,wherewasLiChingPing?Whatwasunexpectedwasthatshewasunderhousearrest,jailed,criticized,underforcelabor,,shealsolostherjobandfamily,sufferingunderstrenuousinsultswithnoonetodependon.Withpovertyandillness,shehadtosellpopsicles,waterandmadepaperboxesandpickedgarbageinordertomaintainaliving.Shesurvivedwithstrength.Whencollectinggarbage,shepickedupsomebottleswithcolorswhichshequietlywashedandclearedouttodopainting.Duringthetimewhenshewasquestionforinvestigation,sheevenpaintedwithherhandsbehindherbackagainstthewall.Thisisindeedafaithfuldiscipleofartbeyondlimits,someonededicatedtoartevenwithdeaththreatsbutnoregrets,trulyanoutstandingheroineontheartplatform.IndeedshewaslikewhatHsuBeiHongwroteonherpaintingalbumduringthe30’sthen,“ArtComesFirst!”Shedidtreatartmoreimportantandmoreprioritizedthananythingelse.Forthesakeofart,sherefusedalovingboyfriendandremainedsingleallherlife.Forart,shedidnotmindtheinsultandglory,orwhatwaslostandgainedbuttookonallthesufferings.Fromherlife,wesawtheperfectunityofartandlife.Asweknow,theartlinkedwithlifeperfectlyisthetrueartthatisnobleandholy.HerlifeandartcouldeasilybecomparedwithothergreatartistssuchasHsuChinTeng,theGreat8Mountaineers,VanGough,reflectingallthedetails.Duringthe80’sand90’softhelastcentury,shepaintedwithgreateffortsatsucholdage,bloomingjustlikeplumflowersthroughwinterandintospringwithlargevolumeofworks.“TheEchoesofLife”washerfirstworkfromherheartafterjusticewasserveduponrelease.Thestraight,upshootingcoconuttree,thespiritsflowinginthevastuniverse,herpaintingsarelikefastrunningonthespiraluniversaltracks,combiningwithanoldperson’sfeelingstowardlifeanddreamstoideals.Itwasfilledwithatasteofphilosophicalandsymbolicsigns;“ForgetMeNot”and“Cousin”areportraitswithimaginedstates.Fromtheseweseearomanticexpressionwithdeeppowersofrealism,addedwithlivelyandcolorfulsceneries,mysticpeopleandfocusedflowersandwonderfullyinfusedwithexpressedOrientalflavorsandWesternabstracttoviewthecharacteristicsofperformance.Fromthelatestagesofthe90’scamemoreabstractworks,itwasnothardforustocatchthemessagesoffeelingsbetweenhertouchesandcolors.Wefeelthestrongfeelingsofhatredandloveaswellasgoodnessandevilofthepainter’s.So,fromChingPing’sworkasanoldpersontheycontainedtheDNAoftheChineseinkpaintings,combinedwithformaltrainingfromrealisticeffortsofteachingsofIndianbrushpaintingmaster,alongwithinspirationsofotherWesternmasterssuchasMartis,Picassos,VanGoughandBlocks,eventuallyformingherownuniquepaintinglanguagesandartoutlooks.Herworksafterhersufferingsweremorepassionateandfreeroamingatwillbutwithdeepinnerfeelingsreachingthepurityofhighfire,likecolorfulpoemsandsymphoniesrichwiththe5tastesoflife.

1911年11月16日生于湖北荆州。
1931 考入武昌美专。
1932年进上海新华艺专就读。
1935年毕业,任教上海闸北安徽中学。
1937年新华艺专研究生毕业,受聘于吉隆坡坤城女子中学艺术部主任。
1938年参加刘海粟、司徒乔、杨曼生等在马六甲、槟城举办的巡回画展。
1941年受“南洋华侨总会”委托,接待应陈嘉庚之邀来南洋讲学的徐悲鸿,为其协办画展。《南洋商报》出版徐悲鸿选辑、作序的《青萍画集》
1942年回国,刘海粟为她开具上海美专的“教授证”,建议她留校任教。因政局混乱回荆洲。后去武汉,在汉口举办个展。
1943年返上海,母校在大兴公司为他举办画展。同年赴东京、大阪、横滨等地举办画展。被日本画坛誉为“中国画坛一娇娜”。
1946年齐白石在北京“六国饭店”参观其画展并题词。同年秋,上海商务印书馆出版《李青萍旅行日记》。
1947年被国民党以“汉奸罪”关押,9个月后无罪释放。
1949年回到荆州,为救济难民举办义展。经郭沫若介绍到重庆,为重庆“9。2”大火赈灾义展。
1950年调到文化部艺术处,与田汉、徐悲鸿、梅兰芳等艺术家共事。
1951年受聘北京美术出版社,负责评阅中外美术作品。后到苏北治理淮河工程指挥部体验生活。
1952年回到北京,改派荆州,江陵县公安局以“海外关系复杂”为由对其监视审查,实行管制。
1954年解除管制。
1955年江陵县公安局又以“特嫌”、“反革命”罪将她逮捕。
1956年获释。
1958年划为右派。被押到湖北大冶劳改。
1961年转咸宁茶场劳教。
1962年解除劳教回到江陵。
1966年文革开始。遭受批斗、游街,以糊纸盒、捡破烂度日。
1979年右派改正,每月补助20元救济金。
1982年确认其归侨身份,恢复公职,作干部退休处理。
1986年湖北省美协、湖北省侨办等单位联合为她举办个人画展。反响强烈。数十家媒体专题报道。湖北省博物馆收藏部分作品。
1987年成为中国美协会员。
1990年向亚运会捐赠十幅新作。
1995年传记《生的回声》由东方出版社出版。
2002年股骨颈骨折,停止作画。
2004年初逝世。

1911 Born in Jin Zhou, Hu Bei Province
1931 Entered Wu Chang Art College with examination
1932 Enter Hsin Hua Art College
1935 Graduated, started teaching at An Hui High School in Tsa Bei, Shanghai
1937 Graduated from Hsin Hua Art College, Graduate Division
1938 Joined roving exhibition of Liu Hai Su, Si Tu Chiao, Yang Man Shen and others held in Malacca, Penang
1941 Received request of “Nanyang Overseas Chinese General Council” to assist Hsu Bei Hong to hold an exhibition at the asking of Chen Gia Gun. “Nanyang Commercial Paper” published “Selected Works of Hsu Bei Hong” and Hsu Bei Hong wrote an introduction for the “Paintings of Ching Ping”
1942 Returned to China. Liu Hai Su helped her to obtain “Teaching Certificate” at Shanghai Art College and suggested that she stayed to teach. Because of political turmoil, she returned to Chin Zhou, later went to Wu Han and held a personal exhibition in Han Kou.
1943 Returned to Shanghai with Mother School holding an exhibition for her at Da Hsin Company. In the same year, exhibitions were held in Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama, praised by the Japanese painting community as the Queen of Chinese painting community
1946 Chih Bai Shih visited her exhibition at Beijing’s “Liu Kuo Hotel” and signed approval for her. During the fall, the Commercial Press in Shanghai published her book “Travel Journal of Li Ching Ping”
1947 Imprisoned by KMT under the crime of Chinese traitor but released after 9 months
1949 Returned to Jin Zhou and held a personal exhibition for helping refuges. With Guo Moruo’s introduction, she held a benefit exhibition for the victims of “Sept. 2” Chungking Fire”
1950 Transferred to the Department of Art of the Ministry of Culture, working together with artist colleagues like Tien Han, Hsu Bei Hong, May Lan Fang, etc.
1951 Upon invitation, employed by the Beijing Art Publishers to conduct critical viewing of art works domestically and internationally. Later, she was sent to the Command Center of Huai River Management to experience the realistic aspects of life
1952 Returned to Beijing, and sent to Jin Zhou, was under investigation and observation by the Jiang Ling County Publish Security Bureau due to “complicated overseas relations” and her actions were under strict control
1954 Control removed
1955 The Public Security Bureau of Jiang Ling County arrested her again under the crime of “suspected special agent”, “counter revolutionary”
1956 Released
1958 Judged as a rightist, jailed at Hubei for reform through labor
1961 Transferred to Xian Ning Tea Farm for labor education
1962 Released from labor education and returned to Jiang Ling
1966 The Cultural Revolution began. Suffered by critical struggle, parading on streets and making paper boxes and collecting garbage as a way of life
1979 Corrected from being a rightist, received a monthly relief fund of 20 RMB
1982 Confirmed her status as a returning overseas Chinese and resumed her public office job and under cadre retirement program
1986 Hubei Provincial Association, the overseas Chinese Office of Hubei Province and other units joined forces to hold a personal exhibition for her. The response was overwhelming and dozens of media carried special reports. The Hubei Provincial Museum included part of her work in their collections.
1987 Became a member of the China Art Association
1990 Donated 10 pieces of new works to the Asian Game
1995 Biography “Echoes of Life” published by the Eastern Publishers
2002 Backbone and neck bone broken and stopped painting
2004 Died early in the year
